Nagoya

Day 356 (June 19, 2019) – Nagoya, Japan

We were only in Nagoya for a night, so it really doesn’t require much commentary. It was just an overnight layover on our trip from Kyoto to Magome, but we did visit a very cool museum in the afternoon called the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology.

On the bus from Kyoto to Nagoya.

This museum was all about the history of the Toyota company and their innovation over the years. The museum was split into two parts: the earlier years when the company used to be involved in the textile industry and the later years when the company was involved with the making and manufacturing of cars. There were a lot of people working at the exhibits and they told us how cotton was made into yarn and how yarn was sown into cloth. They had all these old sewing machines that still ran. And these weren’t small sewing machines, these were industrial scale sewing machines. They made quite the racket when they were going. It was cool to see and watch.

An entire room full of sewing machines. Most had a big red button that could be pushed to turn them on.

The second part of the museum had demonstrations on how different parts of a car work and also on how cars were assembled with hydraulic presses and robotics. Everything was still in working order and we ran around everywhere pressing giant red buttons and watching the machines go to work. It was an unexpectedly entertaining afternoon.

All we really had time left to do was grab a dinner of Japanese curry and call it a night. The next day we were off on a train to Magome.
