Czechia Road Trip, Part 4: Telč to Mikulov

Day 421 (August 23, 2019) – Mikulov, Czechia

Shortly after departing Telč, we arrived in Třebíč. Our plan was to stop for lunch, but we still had leftover pizza from the night before. We parked the car in a parking lot and ate the rest of the pizza while sitting in the car. The weather was kind of icky that day, filled with gray and cloudy skies, but we took a walk all around Třebíč. The town would not have seemed much different from all the others had it not been for a self-guided walking tour that we followed, which ended up being a nice experience. All around Třebíč were big maps showing a walking route to take that passed by all the important sites. The residents were very proud of the town’s history because it had been a place where both Christian and Jewish communities had peacefully lived together for hundreds of years.

By the early afternoon, we had made it to Mikulov where we spent three nights. Mikulov is only a stone’s throw away from Austria and is the center of Czechia's wine region. We had the hardest time finding an affordable place to stay in the area. We ended up at a large hotel, paying over $70 a night, which was one of our most expensive accommodations of this trip, but it was all we could find. Well, it turned out that we got some sort of suite. It wasn’t just a normal room. There was a jacuzzi and a couch and an enormous balcony. We would have been happy paying less for a smaller room, but I guess that wasn’t an option when we made the booking. The hotel also included a continental breakfast in the morning, which was a very nice treat for us. It basically meant that we could have a huge breakfast and then not be hungry again until dinner time. We took advantage of the comfortable room and the fast internet and finished a lot of trip planning there, including transportation home on a transatlantic cruise. We couldn’t believe it, but after all this time on the road we finally had a date, November 10 2019, when we would be returning to the US. That meant we only had nine weeks left before we’d board a boat in Rome that would take us all the way back to Florida!

Our hotel in Mikulov. We had one of the few rooms with a balcony. We were in the room above the entrance with the semi-circular white balcony.

We could see some nice sunsets from the room too.

Mikulov was a pretty cute town and, like all the others, also had a town square and a namesake castle. In town we had a chance to try some of the Czech wines. They were quite good, but I was surprised to find that despite being in a wine region the beverage of choice was still, most definitely beer. You’d think that anywhere you went in town you’d be presented a wine menu, but no. We were still getting the immediate, “two beer?” statement/question that we had received everywhere else in Czechia. That was ok though. We still had a chance to try a few different kinds of wine.

We were also getting a little tired of eating out all the time so we had two grocery store dinners in Mikulov where we went shopping for a bottle of wine, bread, cheese, dips, salads, and whatever else we could find in the grocery store and we took it all back to our hotel to eat out on the patio.
